Episode 2: Nitin Sawhney

Episode 2: Nitin Sawhney

I don’t think of music as work, music is incredibly spiritually enriching, I’m very lucky in that I don’t have many things that stress me out…

Nitin  Sawhney  is  one  the  most  distinctive  and  versatile  musical  voices  around  today,  achieving  an  international  reputation  across  every  possible  creative  medium. In  2017  he  received  the  Ivor  Novello  Lifetime  Achievement  award,  and  is  firmly  established  as  a  world-class  producer,  songwriter,  DJ,  multi-instrumentalist,  orchestral  composer  and  cultural  pioneer. Sawhney  has  become  a  modern-day ‘Renaissance  man  in  the  worlds  of  music,  film,  videogames,  dance  and  theatre.  His  endless  creative  curiosity  makes  him  a  formidable  polymath  across  the  whole  artistic  range  of  media  associated  with  the  music  industry. With  over  20  studio  albums  to  his  name,  including  solo  albums,  film  soundtracks  and  compilations,  he  has  received  a  substantial  wealth  of  major  national  and  international  awards  for  the  work. In  2018  Sawhney  completed  the  entire  composition  of  Warner’s  big-budget  2018  blockbuster ‘Mowgli’.

Nitin and Claire have collaborated on many live music and yoga events, with a deep connection creatively. In this episode, they sat down in Nitin’s London recording studio to chat about life, politics, maths (Nitin, not Claire..) and yoga. The depth of thought that goes into every action of Nitin’s is why he is such a revered musician & composer. Their conversation is ultimately down-to-earth, open and gives an insight into Nitin’s approach to life and music.

Things we talk about in this episode:

  • Music as meditation and finding peacefulness
  • Maths. Nuff said. Some complicated (yet simple to Nitin) equations for us to solve
  • The spiritually uplifting qualities of music
  • His yoga practice
  • Travelling in India and yoga retreats
  • Being in the kitchen with his Mum as a child
  • Composing the new Mowgli movie directed by Andy Serkis
